Jot — privacy policy
Last updated 22 July 2026
Jot is a note-taking app for Android made by Smashing Bits Consulting AB (org.nr 559048-2526), Tumba, Sweden. Jot has no user accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no trackers. Your notes are yours: they live on your device, and this policy describes the few, deliberate exceptions to that.
Data on your device
Notes, drafts, and settings are stored locally on your device. Deleting the app deletes them. We cannot read them — they are never sent to us.
Google backup — off by default
Jot's cloud backup is opt-in. Unless you turn on "Back up to Google" in Jot's settings, your notes are not included in Android's backup and nothing is uploaded.
If you opt in:
- Android's own backup service uploads Jot's data to your personal Google account, roughly once a day, on Google's schedule.
- On Android 9 and later, this backup is end-to-end encrypted with a key derived from your device lock screen, provided you have one set.
- Turning the toggle off stops future backups. It cannot remove a copy already uploaded; that copy remains subject to Google's backup retention, outside the app's control.
Moving your data directly to a new phone with Android's device-to-device transfer works whether or not backup is enabled — that transfer goes from phone to phone and is not stored on Google's servers.
Voice input
Speech recognition happens entirely on your device. Audio you record never leaves your phone. The first time you use voice input, Jot downloads a language model (about 40 MB) from Alpha Cephei (alphacephei.com), the maker of the open-source Vosk recognizer — like any download, that request reveals your IP address to the server. The model is fetched once and reused.
Feedback you choose to send
Jot has an optional feedback form in its settings. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send. A submission contains:
- the feedback type and your message;
- your email address, only if you choose to enter one, so we can reply;
- diagnostics shown to you on the form itself: app version, Android version, and device manufacturer and model. No device identifiers.
Feedback is stored with Cloudflare in the European Union. Your IP address is not stored with your feedback. Feedback is deleted automatically after 12 months, or earlier on request. It is never shared or sold, and no third party processes its content.
Permissions
- Microphone — voice input, on-device only, and only while you use it.
- Notifications — an optional quick-capture notification, off by default.
- Internet — used solely for the one-time voice model download and for feedback you send. Jot never contacts the network on its own.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of personal data we hold about you, and object to or ask us to restrict its processing (for Jot, that can only be feedback you have sent). Email contact@smashingbits.se. You can also lodge a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY).
